Mr. Ellis: Do you have an opinion on whether or not we'll ever see DRM-free ebooks as the industry standard? Do you think that would be a good thing? I, for one, would start buying many more ebooks--and a higher-quality ereader--if I knew my titles wouldn't be marooned on a single company's platform. (It probably goes without saying, but I don't pirate.) (Also, I tried Googling to see if you've commented on this before--couldn't find anything.) Thanks!

We’re pretty much down to the “what kind of socks do you wear / what is your opinion on the colour of the sky today” kind of question.  While you can still message me privately using the Tumblr ask function, I think I’m done with answering general questions for a little while.

As far as this one goes: my opinion counts for nothing.  My assumption is that DRM-free is inevitable, as it was in music, but that it’ll take a fairly long time, as with music.  My current personal stance is that I assume I’m renting any large piece of digital content I pay money to a large stack for.  Which may sound silly to some, but it means I don’t suffer the sudden anger and disappointments of others.  And I do like my Kindle device and apps.
